Introduction to hyperhidrosis TREATMENT

What is Hyperhidrosis? Simply put, Hyperhidrosis is a term that refers to abnormally excessive sweating of underarms, extremities (such as the soles of feet and the palms of hands) and the face. This is a very common condition, and can be due to an underlying disease, or have no obvious reason for its occurrence. Either way, it can lead to embarrassment and social isolation.  There are two types of Hyperhidrosis; primary and secondary. Primary hyperhidrosis is genetic and secondary hyperhidrosis begins in childhood years and exacerbates around puberty, mainly affecting women. There are many interventions for this condition such as taking medication (topically or orally), adopting a vegetarian diet, behavioral therapy (stress reduction), Botox injections or surgery as last resort. The FDA approved Botox for the treatment of hyperhidrosis in 2004. Botox injections are an effective way to drastically lessen the severity of hyperhidrosis, however; a consultation is recommended.

The Process of hyperhidrosis TREATMENT

The nervous system controls sweating and therefore, using botulinum toxin (Botox) to block the nerves responsible for sweating will alleviate hyperhidrosis. After a consultation to understand the cause and severity of the condition, a very fine needle is used to inject small amount of Botox just beneath the skin.

This process is not painful and is a relatively quick procedure. Some of the questions to determine the root issue of hyperhidrosis are; is this condition genetic (Does someone in the immediate family suffers from hyperhidrosis)?, list of medications taken, how often does the sweating occur (constantly or certain times)? and what instances does hyperhidrosis to worsen? The reason for understanding the underlying condition, is to determine if Botox injections are the right option.

How Long Do hyperhidrosis INJECTIONS Last?

Typically Botox injections to treat hyperhidrosis will last anywhere from 3-6 months (based on severity) and sometimes longer. This is due to the fact that external factors impact the longevity of the treatment. Some of those factors are strenuous exercise, living in hot and humid climate areas, menopause, psychological stress, anxiety, and prescription medications (such as insulin, antidepressants and stimulants) to name a few.

How Much Does hyperhidrosis TREATMENT Cost?

The cost of Botox injections for hyperhidrosis treatment varies, however, on average it ranges from $1,000 – $1,500. Be sure to see a board certified medical professional for all cosmetic treatments and procedures to avoid possible complications.
