Sclerotherapy remains the gold standard in treating unsightly spider and varicose veins since the 1930s. It is a very popular procedure especially in states such as Florida, Las Vegas, Texas and Arizona as these areas have warmer climates, and people are seen wearing shorts more often revealing their legs. It is a non-surgical medical procedure that is done via injecting a solution directly into the vein to eliminate the appearance of dark spider veins. Choosing the right candidate for sclerotherapy is important to ensure that the diameter of the spider veins is not thinner than the needle used to inject the veins. It is also important to note that some varicose veins cannot be treated by sclerotherapy and a vascular consultation may be required. Sclerotherapy is a cosmetic procedure and it is not meant to treat aching, burning and throbbing twisted varicose veins. Additionally, veins that can are used for heart bypass surgery in the future, will not be treated with sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy is a very satisfying procedure to watch as the veins disappear right before your eyes. More than one treatment is required and is takes anywhere from 3 sessions to over 6 sessions based on the color, severity and number of veins present on the legs and thighs. The solution used to inject the veins, irritates the lining of the blood vessels and cause them to shrink, stick together and eventually disappear. Some burning and discomfort is experienced but the sensation subsides within seconds. Compression socks and leggings are recommended to wear afterwards, and physical activity is recommended right after. Walking everyday will help with circulation. What is not recommended post sclerotherapy procedure is direct sunlight, hot tubs, jacuzzies and sauna. Some bruising is to be expected but those fade within days to weeks. Results from each session are seen within 3-6 weeks after.
